Landpac is a technology driven company that has developed the new and innovative technology of Impact Compaction for use on compaction of civil engineering works. Landpac holds many worldwide patents on various aspects of this new technology. Landpac's main base is in South Africa and it has operations in Peoples Republic of China, Australia, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Southern Africa.

Landpac first brought their Impact Compaction technology to China for demonstration purposes during 1995, and after some very successful trials that were held over the next few years together with the Department of Communication's Road Design Institute of Beijing, a decision was made to invest in China. Landpac registered Landpac Impact Compaction Technology Development (Beijing) Co., Ltd in February 1999 in the Beijing Economic and Technology Development Zone.

During the period that Landpac has been in China, numerous projects have been performed using Landpac's Impact Compaction Equipment and Technology. A number of the provinces throughout China have recognised the advantages that can be gained by using Landpac Impact Compaction for Proof-rolling of their highway road construction projects once the stage of sub-base layer construction has been completed. By using Landpac Impact Compaction at this stage, the developers are able to ensure that the quality of the layer works is improved and that any weak areas are identified and corrected before the expensive top layers of the road are put in place..

Landpac Impact Compaction can also be used to improve the strength of in-situ ground to depths of 2m and more. There have also been a number of projects in China that have used Landpac Impact Compaction to gain increased strength from in-situ ground and in so doing have been able to enhance the strength of the final construction works and in many cases have been able to save a lot of money by reducing the amount of 'better quality material' that needed to be brought into the site from elsewhere.

Another application that has been carried out in China is the use of Landpac Impact Compaction Technology to rehabilitate failed concrete roads. The Landpac Impact Compactors are used to break up the failed concrete road pavements and to compact all the layerworks below the failed concrete layer in order to improve the overall strength of the existing roadworks.

All of these applications have been carried out in various provinces throughout China. Lanpdac has operated as far north as Heihe on the Russian border, as far south as Zhanjiang in Guangdong Province, as far west as Korla in Xinjiang and as far east as Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province. Landpac has been used on impact compaction projects in 14 provinces within the Peoples Republic of China. Projects include, highway construction, airport construction, road rehabilitation and foundation improvement projects.

Landpac has succeeded in getting impact compaction technology recognised and accepted despite many challenges, the most serious of which is the infringement of Landpac's intellectual property rights. We will continue to rigorously defend our patents and take legal action against the producers of copy impact compaction equipment. This is a serious problem within China and one that South African companies need to take notice of. On the positive front Landpac has a some success on having one of our patents upheld and having a patent that was issued for a copy impact compactor declared invalid.

Landpac has had a successful year in 2001 having doubled the turnover from 2000 and our target for 2002 will be to increase this turnover by a further 25 percent. We will also be looking at new applications for impact compaction such as the compaction of dams. Landpac in conjunction with other South African companies is busy with a feasibility study into the introduction of rubber bitumen into the Peoples Republic of China. A key objective for 2002 will be to continue the pressure on companies and organisations that infringe our intellectual property right.
